The Lego Movie emerged triumphant at the UK box office in 2014, though its takings are likely to be trumped shortly by Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Overall, however, it was not a vintage year for the bean counters. Although the total haul exceeded £1.1 billion for the fifth consecutive year, industry analysts Rentrak report that it fell by 2.3% – the most significant reduction since modern records began in 1991. Four films powered through the £40m barrier in 2013; not a single one managed this in 2014. But one record was broken. With £22.7m in the kitty, The Wolf of Wall Street overtook Hannibal‘s 13-year record to become the highest-grossing 18 certificated film ever released in the UK. The Inbetweeners 2 was the biggest British success, followed by that unexpected hit Paddington and – shudder – Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie. And no fewer than seven of the top ten films were sequels, which means we can expect much more of the same in future.
