Sketch writers and Bristol improvisers come together for a night of ‘Basic Self Care’
From some of the creative minds behind post-apocalyptic improv comedy Tales From the Wasteland and the improv historical fantasy drama Blame of Thrones, a night of brand-new sketch comedy will be coming to The Wardrobe Theatre on June 25-26.
Jack Greenwood was the originator of the idea, bringing together the team for the project – which has been titled Basic Self Care – at the end of 2025.
“We’ve taken nine of the best comedic improvisers from Bristol’s famed improv scene”, he explains, “and teamed them up with four comedy writers to develop 16 short sketches, all of which are quite tonally different.
“A fun detail: we had to cut one of our sketches on Saturday, because Saturday Night Live UK aired a sketch that was the exact same premise as one we came up six months ago. Awful, awful timing!”
In bringing writers and improvisers together in a series of workshops, the creators have been able to craft scenes rich in what they call “a unique blend of spontaneity and precision”; a combination they hope will “keep you guessing (and laughing) all night long”.
