Saffron collaborate on festival industry workshops for marginalised genders

By Hayley Joyes  Saturday Apr 5, 2025

Saffron is a music tech and education initiative based in Bristol working to address gender inequality within the music industry.

Now the Saffron team are using their education platform to share a series of online music industry workshops alongside festival stalwarts, Team Love.

The three part online workshop series seeks to engage with women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to show practical ways into the festival industry.

The purpose is to create a space for these groups that are so often marginalised in these industries. Saffron reports that ‘Women, non-binary and trans people occupy less than 5 per cent of the music tech industry.’

In order to open things up Team Love and Saffron have zoomed in on three routes in providing learning sessions with women working within booking and programming, DJing and artist self management.

While they’ve already wrapped the first session (available to watch via the Saffron Member’s Platform), attendees were privy to Love International festival programmer and DJ Ellie Stokes who broke down the intricacies of building a festival line up.

The session explores everything from ideation to booking and delivery. It’s a real crash course in how to nail it, plus tips on how to get into this line of work.

On Thursday, April 24 it’s Saffron mentor, DJ and owner of Soft Raw records, Danielle.

During the session Danielle will share her journey from record store to main stage sets at some of the most well known festivals – Glastonbury, Love International, Houghton to name but a few – and events around the world. There will be a Q&A at the end of the session for extra hints and tips.

The crescendo for this series features Saffron artist and performer, Marla Kether, on Tuesday, May 27. When she’s not playing for Little Simz or Loyle Carner’s band, she is pushing her incredible strain of electronic music.

Marla’s a seasoned pro when it comes to how to show up online and on stage. She hopes to inspire emerging artists to take charge of their own performances and maximise their festival experience with her workshop.
