Sci-fi writer launches latest book as monkey
A monkey launched Macaque Attack, the last of Gareth L. Powell’s trilogy, last night at Forbidden Planet in Clifton and it’s all because of a bet the author lost last year. Bristolian author Powell promised his Twitter followers that he would show up looking like his main character if the book cover was retweeted more than 1000 times. They complied and so did he.
The monkey was of course Ack-Ack Macaque, the gun-slinging Spitfire pilot from 2058 who has saved the world a couple of times and now faces a new adventure in Macaque Attack. Powell’s strong and creative writing has won him the support of his readers and the BSFA Award for Best Novel in 2013. He has published a collection of short stories, the Last Reef, the Macaque trilogy and the two novels The Recollection and Silver Sands.
In the thrilling conclusion of the Macaque Trilogy, the dangerous but charismatic Ack-Ack Macaque finds himself leading a dimension-hopping army of angry monkeys, facing an invading horde of implacable killer androids, and confronting the one challenge for which he was never prepared: impending fatherhood. Meanwhile, former journalist Victoria Valois fights to save the electronic ghost of her dead husband and reclaim his stolen soul from the sands of Mars.
