Tolls both way proposed for Severn bridges

By Bristol24/7  Monday Nov 7, 2016

The government has confirmed that it is considering a new ‘free-flowing’ tolling system which would see motorists paying Severn tolls when heading either way between Wales and England.

Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns said the system would allow drivers to pay without stopping at a toll booth on the crossings.

The proposals could be based on a similar scheme used by the Dartford Crossing but Mr Cairns said the changes could be “hugely expensive to deliver and there’s not much competition on the technology”.

Under the current system only motorists driving into Wales pay, with car drivers charged £6.60.

Mr Cairns said the UK government was thinking of a toll of £1.80 to £1.90 each way for cars.
