Mayor Election 2016 / News

Charles Lucas chosen as Tory mayor candidate

By Louis Emanuel  Monday Sep 14, 2015

Clifton councillor Charles Lucas has been selected as the Conservatives’ mayoral candidate.

He beat GP surgery manager Steve Smith in an open primary election on Monday evening.

Members of the public – regardless of their political affiliation – were invited to register for the event and cast their vote.

The shortlist was decided by the local Conservative party.

Lucas was elected to the city council at the second attempt in 2013 and has acted as cabinet adviser for business change, arts, culture and sports.

He joins Marvin Rees, selected by Labour on Friday, and Kay Barnard, selected by the Lib Dems on Sunday.

They, among two other independent candidate, will challenge incumbent George Ferguson who is seeking a second term in office.

Elections take place in May.
