Frankenstein comes to Millennium Square
Fancy seeing the world premiere of Royal Ballet Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett’s new ballet inspired by Mary Shelley’s Gothic masterpiece? Fancy seeing it for free on the big screen in an outdoor setting? You’re in luck. The Royal Ballet’s Frankenstein is the first of three live performances being broadcast to Millennium Square this summer.
Scarlett’s first full-length ballet is a period adaptation with a score by American composer Lowell Liebermann, whose First Piano Concerto provided the music for his earlier Viscera. You can see it at 7.30pm on Wednesday 18 May, with a pre-performance screening from 7pm. Admission is free but on a strictly first come, first served basis. You can find full conditions of entry here. The ballet is also being screened simultaneously in many local cinemas if you don’t fancy the al fresco experience. Go here for the list of local participating venues.
This is the first screening in the 2016 BP Big Screens season, organised in partnership with the Royal Opera House. There are two more screenings to come in Millennium Square. The ROH’s new production of Verdi’s Nabucco, with Placido Domingo, is showing on Thursday 9 June. There’s more Verdi on Thursday 14 July with Il Tovatore – y’know, the one with the Anvil Chorus.
