Bristol’s contactless donation scheme raises £40,000 for people facing homelessness

By Safiya Bashir  Monday Jun 7, 2021

The innovative donation scheme by Bristol City Centre BID and local homelessness charity Caring in Bristol has raised over £40,000 for people facing homelessness in Bristol.

The money was raised between 13,000 generous Bristolians whose donations will be split between Caring in Bristol’s homelessness prevention work and other organisations working with those experiencing homelessness, such as Second Step and St Mungo’s.

Since launching in September 2019, the scheme has worked with businesses to install contactless card points in bars, cafes, and businesses throughout the city centre, giving locals the option to make a contactless donation of £3 for every tap.

“We wanted TAP for Bristol to be an initiative that the city felt ownership over, and it really feels like we have achieved this and that we have the support of so many Bristol residents, workers and city users,” said Vicky Lee, the project lead for TAP.

“To be able to feedback on the projects progress is such a critical part of the work we are doing. Knowing that together we have been able to support so many people on a very personal and individual basis really demonstrates the positive impact of TAP for Bristol,” Vicky added.

Half of the money raised so far has been used Caring in Bristol and CHAS Bristol’s prevention work to support their new Bristol Homelessness Prevention Partnership aimed at those who have struggled with rent payments and managing bills – pressures which have been exacerbated by the pandemic.

Today, the scheme announced three new locations across Bristol. Bianchis on Picton Street, Pasta Loco on Cotham Hill and Bristol Property Centre on Chandos Road will all have donation points, where you will be able to donate at the tap of your contactless card.
