Bristol company nominated for Earthshot Prize 2025
A Bristol company whose self-cleaning filter for homes and factories stops harmful microplastics from entering our rivers, oceans and water supplies has been nominated for the Earthshot Prize.
The Earthshot Prize “finds, supports and celebrates those who turn bold ideas into solutions for our planet” and gives £1m to the five best solutions each year to scale their work.
Matter, based on the Avon Trading Estate off Albert Road in St Philip’s, is in the ‘revive our oceans’ category alongside one firm from the Netherlands and another from the USA.
The team at Matter has developed what is described as “a breakthrough filtration technology” which is designed to capture microplastics at the point of release.
“Unlike traditional filters, the filter is self-cleaning, cost-efficient and hugely scalable, making it suitable for individual homes through to global supply chains.
“This perfect combination of environmental impact and commercial value means it has the potential to achieve widespread adoption.”
Matter founder and CEO, Adam Root, said: “Our mission is to create impact at a size and scale that meets the enormity of the microplastic pollution challenge.
“Being named a 2025 finalist – and potentially even a winner – would solidify our position as a world leader in this space.
“Crucially, the additional funding would unlock our ability to deploy more industrial units more quickly, while also helping us accelerate impact in the UK and overseas.”
