‘I’d like to see Bristol more connected’

By Bristol24/7  Monday Feb 2, 2026

Steve Goddard the director at Putt Above Bristol.

Putt Above is one of Bristol’s most innovative leisure destinations. Steve began his career as a teenager working at Laser Quest and went on to build a multi-site entertainment business in the city.

From running venues at a young age to launching his own Laser Quest operation and later an activity bar in Bristol, his journey has been shaped by early responsibility, steady expansion and a focus on creating welcoming social spaces.

Can you describe the career journey that has led you to where you are today?

I come from a Laser Quest background and first got involved while I was still in school. I worked at Laser Quest during my Year 10 work experience programme, and from there I secured a weekend job. As the company grew, I gradually took on more responsibility across the wider business, including running a nightclub.

The experience I gained gave me the confidence to move to Bristol and open my own Laser Quest. Over the years, the company has expanded to multiple locations and now offers a variety of activities.

Opening an activity bar in Bristol has been a long-term ambition of mine, and it has been incredibly rewarding to see it grow from a concept into a fully realised venue.

Tell us about one (or more) of the people who inspired you along the way?

Former tennis player Michael Appleton, who was also my boss early in my career, played a huge role in inspiring me. He gave me real responsibilities and opportunities at a young age, which sparked my interest in business and helped shape the direction of my career.

He continues to run successful family entertainment centres today, and his work ethic and leadership style have stayed with me throughout my own journey.

Are there any memorable challenges you have faced along the way?

There have definitely been a few memorable challenges along the way. Potential leases have fallen through at the last minute, which can be incredibly frustrating when you’ve already invested time and energy into a project. And of course, the pandemic was by far the biggest challenge.

The leisure sector was hit particularly hard, and overnight we had to rethink how we operated, how to support our team, and how to keep the business alive. Another major challenge has been managing growth. Growing a business while maintaining quality and consistency across multiple locations isn’t easy, but it’s been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.

What is the most important thing for you to focus on in business?

The most important thing for me to focus on in business is creating a welcoming environment for everyone. Both our guests and our team members should feel valued and comfortable. I want everyone who comes through our doors to leave with a smile on their face.

If you had one piece of advice to offer people aspiring to your role, what would it be?

There’s no time like the present. People have dreams and aspirations, but the only way to turn them into reality is by taking the first step. I was fortunate to take that leap at a young age, before the responsibilities of adulthood made it harder to take risks. Starting early gave me the experience and confidence that shaped my career.

If you could change one thing about your sector, or Bristol as a whole, what would it be?

I’d like to see Bristol more connected. For a city of its size, the public transport system could be much better. Many people, particularly those living on the outskirts, can feel isolated from the wider city due to limited transport options.

As for the leisure sector, I wish there were fewer hurdles to starting a new business. There is often too much bureaucracy, which can make it harder for entrepreneurs to bring new ideas and experiences to the city.

What are your aspirations for the future (personally and for Bristol)?

Personally, I’d like to achieve a better work-life balance while continuing to contribute to Bristol’s diverse entertainment sector. For the city, I hope to help promote Bristol as a hub for innovation and creativity, making it a destination for unique entertainment experiences. And of course, like everyone else, I’m still eagerly waiting for the arena to finally open.
