“Heathers meets American Psycho” screams the poster for this black comedy thriller featuring the late Anton Yelchin‘s final performance.
An adaptation of his own play by Cory Finley, it stars modern-day scream queens Olivia Cooke (Ouija) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as reunited childhood chums who team up to murder the latter’s wealthy father. This, they believe, will solve all their problems. And Yelchin is just the lowlife they need to do the deed. A superior entry in the amoral ‘over-privileged girls gone bad’ genre, Thoroughbreds benefits from strong performances and plenty of snappy dialogue. It also proves impressively cinematic for a story that originated on stage.
