An upmarket, noirish arthouse thriller from Swedish-Egyptian director Tarik Saleh, loosely inspired by the real-life case of Lebanese pop star Suzanne Tamim, who was murdered in her Dubai apartment back in 2008.
Fares Fares, who’s recently been forging a successful career as a Hollywood character actor with roles in the likes of Zero Dark Thirty and Rogue One, stars as a world-weary urban cop, mired in a milieu of corruption, who’s assigned to investigate the slaying of a celebrity, only to find that some very powerful people would prefer the case not to be solved. Unfolding against the backdrop of the Tahrir Square protests of January 2011, this is a classy police procedural with a sharp political edge.
