Having incurred the wrath of the censor with his ‘video nasty’ Driller Killer, Abel Ferrara upped the ante with this 1981 follow-up: a rape revenge exploitation thriller provocatively billed as a female Death Wish.
Also known as Angel of Vengeance, it’s the tale of a mute New York seamstress (Zoë Tamerlis Lund) who’s sexually assaulted by two men in quick succession on the way home from work. Naturally, she sets out to take violent revenge. There’s lashings of religious guilt amid the slayings, and those who fret about such things may be reassured to learn that the film has been claimed as a key text in feminist film studies.
