Thirty years after Tina Turner brought the big hair to Beyond Thunderdome, George Miller revived the Mad Max franchise that gave a grateful world Mel Gibson. Mel’s long gone now, possibly to spend more time with his anger, so our very own Tom Hardy – y’know, inaudible bad guy Bane in The Dark Knight Rises – fills the post-apocalyptic boots of ‘Mad’ Max Rockatansky. Tom’s Max is even madder than Mel’s, and he’s joined by a shaven-headed Charlize Theron as feisty sidekick Imperator Furiosa (looks as though somebody’s been reading Hunger Games novels in search of silly name inspiration, as other characters are called Toast, Splendid and Rictus Erectus). Essentially one long chase sequence, Miller’s much acclaimed action flick bagged six Oscars in technical categories, and was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. Go here for our full review.
This is Miller’s preferred monochrome version of the film, dubbed the Black and Chrome Edition. It’s back on screen in the Everyman’s late night classics season.
