We’re used to watching space aliens blowing up the White House and having the heroic Americans saving the world, so it seems only fair that the Russians should take their turn. This slick, FX-heavy blockbuster opens with the Russian military shooting down a humungous UFO as it arrives above Moscow in the middle of a spectacular meteor shower. A heroic colonel then makes contact with the space aliens and agrees to seal off the area so the tentacled folk can effect repairs and leave the Earth in peace. But his rebellious daughter and chums have other ideas and go off in search of alien treasure.
Director Fyodor Bondarchuk, whose previous film was Stalingrad, is a public supporter of Vladimir Putin, who’s no doubt delighted by the depiction of the Russian military as peace-loving folks who are eager to help the little green fellas.
