You’ve got to admire anyone who tries to do something a little different with the tired teen romantic fantasy formula. This adaptation of David Levithan‘s YA bestseller goes full high-concept. Rhiannon (Angourie Rice) is a shy, ordinary teenager in love. Alas, she’s in love with ‘A’ – some kind of entity that hops into a new body each day. Naturally, she races off in hot pursuit of this mysterious supernatural hottie.
Satire is absent, and it’s all played rather solemnly in a way that rather unfortunately comes across like a mopey teen girl version of A Dog’s Purpose. But at least ‘A’ isn’t constrained by gender or race, which means there’s a positive message about inclusivity amid all the yucky stuff.
