Superficially, this is yet another of those horror flicks in which a dyed-in-the-wool sceptic is forced to re-evaluate his worldview after experiencing inexplicable spookiness. Rather more promisingly, it’s an adaptation of The League of Gentlemen co-creator Jeremy Dyson‘s stage play, starring Martin Freeman and (co-writer/director) Andy Nyman, who’s best known for his collaborations with Derren Brown.
As with the play, few of the surprise twists have leaked out (unless you’re really determined to look for them and spoil the whole thing for everyone). So here are the bare bones of the story, which is presented with plenty of nods to those classic Amicus portmanteau flicks. Nyman plays Professor Philip Goodman, an atheist and rationalist who hosts his own TV show which specialises in debunking frauds. But then he’s prompted to re-open three old cases that appear to defy rational explanation…
