After a long career of doom’n’gloom, Ingmar Bergman lightened up with this jolly screen adaptation of Mozart’s great comic opera, which respects its stage origins while being totally cinematic. Purists may object that he takes certain liberties with the text, and demystifies the whole thing by sneaking backstage with his camera, but it’s handsomely staged in a meticulous studio reconstruction of the 18th century Drottningholm Theatre.
The Magic Flute is back on screen in the Watershed’s Celebrating Ingmar Bergman season marking the centenary of the great Swedish director’s birth.
