After the Angry Birds app arrived on the big screen, there seems to have been a contest to demonstrate that no source is so flimsy that it cannot be pumped up to become a CGI animated movie. Now it’s the turn of those ideograms that inarticulate social media users employ to represent their emotions.
Naturally, it’s set in the smartphone city of Textopolis, where all the emojis reside, hoping to be selected by users. TJ Miller voices a hapless emoji who was born without a filter, registering a variety of emotions. So he embarks on a mission to become normal, in a yarn that seems determined to invite comparisons with Pixar’s Inside Out. Brave, huh? Watch out for Patrick Stewart as the voice of, erm, Poop. Betcha at least one critic will be unable to resist the temptation to post the world’s first word-free review, consisting solely of a vomitface emoji.
