Oh dear. Poor old Uncle Walt has got himself into a PC pickle with what was intended to drag the trad Disney animated princess into the 21st century with a modish ethnic, girl power twist.

Set in the South Pacific, it’s the tale of plucky, non-conformist Princess Moana Waialiki, who has something of a gift for navigation. Joining forces with tattooed demi-god Maui (Dwayne Johnson), she sets out to complete the epic journey of her ancestors. Disney must have thought they’d got the cultural sensitivity angle covered by casting young Hawaiian girl Auli’i Cravalho as the voice of Moana. But what they didn’t anticipate was that Polynesians would object to the depiction of Maui as a fatty. Then they were forced to withdraw a Maui Halloween costume in the US after facing accusations of ‘brownfacing’.
