Royal Opera House Encore: Macbeth

Certificate
12A
Running Time
210 mins

When Scottish general Macbeth encounters a group of witches, they prophesy that he will become king. Encouraged by his ambitious, scheming wife, the regal rotter murders King Duncan.

Phyllida Lloyd‘s 2002 production of Verdi’s first Shakespearean opera uses the composer’s 1865 Paris revision (the one with Lady Macbeth’s aria La luce langue). It’s conducted by Antonio Pappano, with a cast that sees Anna Netrebko returning to the role of Lady Macbeth, plus Željko Lučić as Macbeth and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo as Banquo. This production was recorded live in pre-Covid 2018.
