Yes, that’s Karl Marx. But not the venerable, whiskery old commie with whom we’re all familiar. This 32-year-old Marx is Europe’s most feared terrorist, newly arrived in London’s Soho. Broke and miserable, he’s holed up in a cramped, grotty Dean Street flat with his missus and kids, while creditors, rival revolutionary factions and prospective seducers of his wife circle like vultures. At his lowest ebb, he even considers applying for a job as a railway clerk. Little wonder his best mate Engels despairs of this “solipsistic, self-regarding prick”.
Directed by Nicholas Hytner at London’s brand spanking new Bridge Theatre, this new comedy by Richard Bean and Clive Coleman reunites the creative team behind the Broadway and West End hit One Man, Two Guvnors. Rory Kinnear is cast as Marx, with Oliver Chris as Engels. The play is broadcast live from the Bridge on December 7, with encore screenings to follow.
