Handsome oik Nemorino lusts after gorgeous, sophisticated Adina, but stands no chance of getting his leg over – not least because oafish Sergeant Belcore is a rival for her affections. Fortunately, travelling quack Dr Dulcamara is on hand to flog the gullible young man what he claims to be a love potion.
Bartlett Sher‘s staging of Donizetti’s comic opera sees the return of tenor Matthew Polenzani as Nemorino, hxing won wide acclaim for his 2013 performance in the role. Rising South African soprano Pretty Yende is the spirited Adina, Davide Luciano makes his Met debut as the arrogant soldier Belcore, and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo is the potion-peddling Doctor Dulcamara.
