Todd Haynes follows the superb Carol with a dual-narrative drama following the parallel lives of nippers separated in time by 50 years. It’s adapted from the novel by Brian Selznick, whose The Invention of Hugo Cabret was filmed by Martin Scorsese back in 2011.

In 1977, 12-year-old Ben (Pete’s Dragon star Oakes Fegley) runs off in search of his absent father after the death of his mother (Michelle Williams). Back in 1927, a young deaf girl named Rose (Millicent Simmonds) embarks on a similar odyssey to track down silent movie star Lillian Mayhew (Julianne Moore), whom she believes to be her mother. Slowly, these two narrative intertwine. Not every critic has been convinced by this, but all agree that it looks fabulous – especially in the contrast between the monochrome twenties and garishly colourful seventies.
