Actresses Liz (Bibi Andersson), Marianne (Harriet Andersson) and Gunilla (Gunnel Lindblom) are performing in a production of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata as the spirit of ’68 sweeps across Sweden. Since they’ve each got unhappy personal lives (boring hubbies, married lovers, etc), it’s not long before the play begins to influence them. Mai Zetterling’s 1968 feminist drama benefits from fine performances by a trio of Bergman favourites and was declared by Simone de Beauvoir to be “the best movie ever made by a woman”, though the fact that all the men in it are either ineffectual or deeply unpleasant rather loads the dice. The Cube’s screening will be preceded by the short film Hairpiece: A Film for Nappy Headed People.
