Grouchy septuagenarian screenwriter Ralph (John Hurt) has been given a terminal diagnosis. But before he shuffles off this mortal coil, he has two missions to complete: he wants to be reconciled with his estranged son Michael (Max Brown) and ensure that he does not become a burden to his young wife Anna (Sofia Helin). He’s also attended by a mysterious ‘Visitor’ (Charles Dance), whom he has hired to ensure a pain-free demise.
Based on the 1996 stage play by NJ Crisp, which was in turn, as the title implies, inspired by Dylan Thomas, That Good Night is notable for boasting the late John Hurt’s final major screen performance. It’s beautifully shot in the hilltops of the Algarve coastline of Portugal, and the performances by Hurt and Dance are every bit as good as you might expect, though some critics have found it all rather plodding when it should really soar.
