Heir to the Russian throne Nicholas falls for ballerina hottie Mathilde. Alas, his pa Alexander the Third is then involved in an ‘orrible train wreck and the lad must now sacrifice his personal freedom to become emperor.
This lavishly staged historical romance proved a tad too melodramatic for western critical tastes. Back home, it ran into controversy with conservatives who objected to the sex scenes and branded the film “anti-Russian and anti-religious”.
