Shy nine-year-old Yura moves to the countryside to live with his widowed grandmother and finds himself enrolled in a Christian shcool. At first, he’s alienated by all the god-bothery fervour, but then a pint-sized imaginary Jesus (Australian comedian Chad Mullane) pops up to make all his wishes come true.
Winner of the New Directors competition at San Sebastian, Hiroshi Okuyama‘s playful debut feature delivers plenty of comic entertainment and also has much to say about religion and how children perceive the world. It’s on screen in the annual Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme, whose theme this year is happiness.
