Hostiles

Director
Scott Cooper
Certificate

Running Time
133 mins

Black Mass director Scott Cooper reunites with his Out of the Furnace star Christian Bale for a handsome, slow-burning, revisionist anti-racist western set in 1892.

Bale plays a leathery cavalry commander who’s spent his career slaughtering “wretched savages” but now finds himself obliged to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi, enjoying his mandatory casting in such roles) and his family from New Mexico back home to their tribal lands in Montana. Along the way, they encounter widow Rosamund Pike, whose hubby and nippers were slain by Comanche raiders. No great surprises are sprung as Bale’s character undergoes a dramatic transformation along the well-trodden dusty track to redemption. Go here for our full review.
