Mo-cap king Andy Serkis makes his feature debut as director with one of those ‘inspirational’ triumph-over-adversity true stories.
In 1958, 28-year-old Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) is paralysed from the neck down by polio. He’s placed on a respirator and given just three months to live. Against medical advice, his wife Diana (Claire Foy) takes him home and, with her devotion and assistance, he goes on to defy the odds. Not only does he refuse to be imprisoned by his condition, but he also becomes a staunch advocate for disability rights. The screenplay is by William Nicholson, who was Oscar nominated for Shadowlands and Gladiator, and the film is produced by Cavendish’s son, Jonathan.
