A Woman’s Life

Director
Stéphane Brizé
Certificate
12A
Running Time
116 mins

French director Stéphane Brizé follows The Measure of a Man with this emotionally raw period drama adapted from Guy de Maupassant‘s first novel and set in early 19th century Normandy.

It charts 27 years in the life of Jeanne (excellently played by Judith Chemla) – an innocent young aristo who marries local Viscount Julien de Lamare (Swann Arlaud), only to find that he’s a bit of a bounder. Social pressure, however, means that she must endure his miserliness and serial infidelity as her privileged existence becomes a prison. Further misfortune ensues in this classy slice of arthouse misery, shot in the almost-square Academy ratio for added claustrophobia.
