Frankly, it’s hard to summon much sympathy for those who slaughter whales, despite all that liberal hand-wringing guff about endangered lifestyles and traditions. But as this visually stunning documentary reveals, the Faroe Islanders who scoff these unfortunate creatures now find themselves confronted by something other than concerns about the ethics of whaling.
This time, the threat comes from the whales themselves, which have become toxic as a result of pollution of the oceans. Now the islanders face a choice between tradition and their own health.
