The Hellfire Video Club takes a left turn this month with what is arguably the most overlooked great American film of the 1970s.

Michael Ritchie‘s Altman-esque observational satire skewers the ’70s small town beauty pageant game as it follows the cringe-makingly embarassing Young American Miss contest in California. Bruce Dern is on fine form as the head judge, a used car dealer. Watch out too for the young Melanie Griffith as one of the contestants. Shamefully, Smile has never been released on DVD in the UK, so this is a rare opportunity to see it.
