It’ll probably seem curiously quaint and old-fashioned before long, but nothing screams “Now!” quite as loudly as this indie comedy, which bagged the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza) is one of those slightly unhinged social media obsessives with a habit of mistaking ‘likes’ for actual relationships. Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen) is an ‘Instagram Influencer’ (am I the only person who thinks of the telephone sanitisers aboard the Golgafrincham Ark Fleet Ship B in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe when such a job description is mentioned?) with whom Ingrid becomes obsessed. Things start to go awry after she inveigles her way into Taylor’s seemingly perfect life. This black comedy has been described as a Single White Female for the Facebook generation – though plot-wise, without giving too much away, it owes more to Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley.
