Oh dear. The Adjustment Bureau director George Nolfi‘s Bruce Lee biopic arrives on these shores having received quite a drubbing from critics, fans and Lee’s own family after it debuted at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.
The film charts up-and-coming Lee’s early years in San Francisco and his famous showdown with kung fu master Wong Jack Man. The problem? Lee isn’t even at the centre of his own biopic, as it casts him as a sidekick to a white man named Steve McKee (Billy Magnussen). Hence the accusations of ‘whitewashing’. As if that wasn’t bad enough, although Birth of the Dragon is billed as being inspired by a true story, McKee is a fictional character.
