Award-winning Canadian writer Marcello Di Cintio discusses his book, Pay No Heed to the Rockets: Palestine in the Present Tense, with Tom Sperlinger.
In 2012 Marcello Di Cintio accepted the position of writer-in-residence with the Palestine Writing Workshop. Di Cintio had long been looking for a ‘way in’ to Palestine, a starting point other than politics and struggle.
Wherever he visited, Di Cintio found a story. Stories of how revolutionary writing was smuggled from the Naqab Prison; stories from the Gallery Café, whose opening three thousand creatives and intellectuals gathered to celebrate; and the lost generations of stories contained within the books that are held in Israel’s National Library.
Inspired by these many conversations and subsequent investigations with writers, book lovers and Palestine’s literati, Pay No Heed to the Rockets celebrates Palestine through the lens of literature.
About the speakers:
Marcello Di Cintio is an award-winning Canadian writer who has lived in West Africa, North Africa, India and the Middle East. He is the author of three books including Walls: Travels Along the Barricades, which won the 2013 Shaugnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing and the City of Calgary WO Mitchell Book Prize.
Tom Sperlinger is Reader in English Literature and Community Engagement at the University of Bristol. In 2013, he was a Visiting Professor at Al-Quds University in Abu Dis in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. He has written about literature, universities and adult education for publications including The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, The Times Higher and The Times Literary Supplement. Romeo and Juliet in Palestine is his first book.
