UWE Bristol filmmaker wins Student Academy Award

By Milan Perera  Wednesday Sep 10, 2025

A UWE Bristol graduate has made history by winning the university’s first ever Student Academy Award.

Tatiana McCabe, who completed an MA in Wildlife Filmmaking in July, was one of 14 global winners at the 52nd Student Academy Awards, selected from more than 3,000 entries worldwide.

Her documentary Tides of Life tells the story of Richard Tesore, founder of Uruguay’s first centre for marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation.

The film captures Tesore’s lifelong commitment to protecting coastal wildlife and the challenges facing his organisation, S.O.S Rescate de Fauna Marina.

Tatiana said: “Richard’s deep commitment to Uruguay’s marine life was powerful and I was inspired to tell his story as part of my final documentary. I’m so thrilled to know that people care about Richard’s story and it’s touched people in ways I’d hoped.”

Originally from New York, Tatiana moved to Bristol to pursue her childhood dream of working in wildlife filmmaking, drawn by the city’s global reputation and UWE’s strong links with the BBC’s Natural History Unit.

Her award-winning film is also a finalist in the Jackson Wild Media Awards and the Wildscreen Panda Awards 2025.

As a Student Academy Award winner, Tides of Life now qualifies for consideration at the 98th Oscars in the short film categories.

Peter Venn, programme leader for MA Wildlife Filmmaking at UWE Bristol, said: “This is a tremendous win for Tatiana. Her film has an effortless style and enormous heart. Richard’s extraordinary compassion and commitment are captured beautifully. Recognition at these prestigious awards is richly deserved.”

UWE Bristol’s wildlife filmmaking course is co-designed and accredited by BBC Studios Natural History Unit, with 94 per cent of graduates securing employment each year.
