Underpass given makeover celebrating ‘community and shared values’
A well-used underpass in south Bristol has been given a new lease of life, showcasing a striking display of colours and forms that celebrate “identity, community and shared values”.
The underpass, located at the end of Blackmoors Lane, is frequently used by students from Ashton Park School, UWE Bristol and the general public.
The space has now been transformed with eight carefully selected pieces of artwork, which have been painted on the walls, turning the urban landscape into a lively kaleidoscope of colours.
is needed now More than ever
This artistic makeover is the result of a project initiated at Ashton Park School, where a design competition was held for Year 7, 8, and 9 students as part of Black History Month.
Around 700 pupils were invited to submit designs that would reflect inclusivity, celebrate the diversity of the school community, and foster a sense of belonging for all students.
Ruth Johnstone, head of visual arts at Ashton Park School, explained: “We celebrate Black History Month every year, and this year, the event was used as an opportunity to discuss racism and its impact.
“Students and staff engaged in discussions about identity, culture, Black history, and Black culture. They also explored our school’s culture, sense of belonging, community, and values.
“The conversations were as powerful as the historical portraits produced last year and were an unseen but equally important part of this project, which has had a significant impact.
“The students’ designs are the embodiment of all these conversations, showcasing their thoughtful ideas for a piece of work that celebrates who we are as a community.”
The artistic execution was carried out by a team of 12 UWE Bristol’s illustration and fine art students, including two former Ashton Park pupils, who painted the mural between February 27 and March 6.

On the final day of the project, students from Ashton Park School joined the artists to help complete the mural, further enhancing the sense of collaboration.
This initiative marks a continued partnership between UWE Bristol and Ashton Park School, which is expected to grow stronger, helping to bridge the gap between the university and the local community.
The project was made possible with the support of Bristol City Council, who granted permission for the underpass to be painted. The initiative was primarily funded by the UWE Bristol Community Grant, following a successful application by Grace Williams, a second-year art student at the university. Additional funding came from Ashton Park School.
Francesca Romita, team leader at UWE Bristol’s Civic and Community Engagement, remarked: “This collaboration demonstrates the important role our students play in building cohesion within the community and celebrating the values that make Bristol a great place to live.
“We hope this strong partnership will inspire secondary school students to consider higher education, with UWE Bristol students serving as role models and showing them the opportunities higher education can provide.”
