South African student choir raises record £37k on 2025 UK tour
The popular student choir, Project Zulu Choir, has completed its most successful UK tour to date, raising nearly £37,000 to support schools in Madadeni Township, South Africa.
Over three weeks in May, 20 young singers and five teachers from Sipheni Senior Primary and Sithobelumthetho Primary performed traditional Zulu songs and dances across the South West and Wales, filling theatres, schools and city centres with powerful performances.
Highlights included a gala concert at Bristol Beacon alongside Britain’s Got Talent finalist Innocent Masuku and an appearance at a Bristol Bears rugby match.

Funds raised will provide solar power and digital classroom equipment for the two schools, creating lasting educational benefits.
Since its launch in 2013, Project Zulu – led by UWE Bristol – has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds through its tours.
Dr Ben Knight, director of Project Zulu, described the 2025 tour as “our most exciting yet”, praising the children’s talent, the generosity of audiences and the life-changing impact the money will have in South Africa.
Many of the choir members experienced several things for the first time – from riding ferries and trying new foods, to their very first attempt in ten-pin bowling.
Along the way, the children shared their culture, embraced new experiences and built connections that will perhaps stay with them well beyond the tour.

Kate Willis, Project Zulu coordinator, added: “A tour of this scale simply wouldn’t be possible without the support of so many people.
“From the host families who welcomed the children into their homes, to the volunteers, schools, venues and organisations who offered their time and resources – we are deeply grateful. Your generosity, enthusiasm and care helped make this tour such a success and gave every choir member memories that will last a lifetime.
