Bristol Olympian secures ‘nail-biting’ podium finish at World Championships
A Bristol-based Olympic artistic swimmer who brought in Team GB’s first ever Olympic medal for the event at the Paris Olympics 2024 has completed yet another podium finish, this time in synchronised mixed duet at the World Championships.
While hundreds of UWE Bristol students recently celebrated their graduations at Bristol Beacon in the presence of their friends and family, one soon-to-be graduate was notably absent – for a very good reason.
Izzy Thorpe who won a historic silver medal with her best friend and synchronised swimming partner Kate Shortman at the Paris Olympics in 2024 had to miss her graduation while competing at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

Izzy, a sports rehabilitation student at UWE Bristol, had to swap her graduation cap for a swimming cap as she competed in the mixed duet free final at the World Championships alongside her duet partner, Ranjuo Tomblin.
The podium finish was a nail-bitingly tight affair where the gold and bronze medals were separated by mere 1.7980 points.
Izzy and Ranjuo won the bronze medal in the mixed duet free event, scoring 322.0583. The duo bounced back after agonisingly missing a podium finish in the mixed duet tech event on Wednesday.

On her latest success UWE Bristol commented: “We’re delighted for UWE Bristol student and Team GB athlete Izzy Thorpe for winning bronze in the synchronised mixed duet bronze medal at the Aquatics World Championships in Singapore.
“Izzy missed her graduation to be able to compete and the dedication has paid off.”
Ranjuo is no stranger to the area, being a Trendell sporting scholar at the University of Bath. The duo’s latest podium finish follows their silver-medal success at the European Championships in June.

Izzy, a former pupil of Clifton High School, had her first taste of synchronised swimming at the age of eight alongside Kate Shortman, whose families are friends themselves, at Filton Leisure Centre.
