Katie Swan flying flag for GB at Wimbledon

By Martin Booth, Wednesday Jul 4, 2018

Bristol’s Katie Swan is flying the flag for Great Britain at Wimbledon this year following her shock victory over world number 36 Irina-Camelia Begu.

It was the 19-year-old’s first ever Grand Slam win after she entered the tournament as a wildcard.

“Winning here is something I’ve dreamt about since I was little,” said Swan.

Swan, ranked 204th in the world, beat Begu 6-2 6-2 on the first day of this year’s tournament and on Wednesday at 11.30am she takes on another Romanian, Mihaela Buzarnescu, on Court 3.

Swan’s career prize money to date totals £99,306. Monday’s victory brought her a guaranteed £63,000, and if she gets through another round she will earn a cool £100,000.

Having started playing tennis at seven years old, Swan’s burgeoning talent was spotted while growing up in Abbots Leigh.

She was coached by Rob Hawkins at David Lloyd until the age of 11 and won her first international tournament in Croatia at the age of 10, going on to play on the competitive junior circuit while still at school.

In January this year, Swan signed with 77 Sports Management, headed up by Andy Murray and two of his business advisers.

Swan is also playing in the ladies doubles at SW19 this year with Katie Boulter.
