Bears back with a bang to sink Saints
Bristol Bears restarted their Prem campaign with a bang, beating Northampton Saints 46-12 at Ashton Gate.
Thirty-five of those points came during an extraordinary first half in which Pat Lam’s men scored five tries and Saints failed to put a single point on the board.
The Bears more than capitalised after Northampton’s Edo Todaro was given a 20-minute red card after just 90 seconds after he took out Sam Worsley in the air.
Bristol’s five first half tries came from scrum-half Kieran Marmion, who scored twice, full-back Tom Jordan, centre Kalaveti Ravouvou and winger Aidan Boshoff; with fly-half Worsley slotting all five conversions.
Worsley’s two penalties were the Bears’ only scores in the second half until Georgian flanker Luka Ivanishvili crossed the whitewash with the last play of the match, with Northampton scoring two tries but the margin was always too much to narrow.
JJ van der Mescht and Tom Litchfield both touched down for the Saints, with England fly-half Finn Smith scoring one conversion.
