Henleaze Lake launch photography competition in memory of former trustee Mark Thompson
For decades, Mark Thompson was an instrumental and well-loved figure at Henleaze Lake, joining back in 1988 and becoming a trustee – as well as an honorary life member.
He died from a fall in early 2025 while on a trip to Sri Lanka, and is now sorely missed by the flourishing community at the flooded former limestone quarry.
In his honour, the Lake has now announced the inaugural Mark Thompson Photography Competition, which is open to full and community access members.

Designed to be “a seasonal celebration of the beauty, wildlife, community and character of the Lake”, the competition is “an opportunity for members to capture the special moments that make the Lake unique”, organisers say.

“Winners will be featured in the annual Lake book, highlighted in a month of the upcoming Lake calendar, and awarded certificates along with additional prizes to be announced. And, of course, there’s the glory!”
The designated competition categories are: Lake Life; Wildlife and Nature; Changing Season; and Reflections and Water, and all entries must be photographs taken in or around the historic site within the last year.

The panel of judges will comprise professional photographer Huntley Hedworth, keen photographers Nick Townsend and Patric Bulmer, and Susie Parr, who is the author of the Lake book.
Prizes will be awarded for the best in category, as well as a young photographer award, a members’ choice, and an overall winner. The event will culminate in an informal ceremony at the Lake on October 11.

The Mark Thompson Photography Competition is open to all full and community access members of Henleaze Lake, who will be contacted with full details and FAQs. All participants can submit up to three photos, and the deadline for entries is mid-September.
