New stands at Memorial Stadium will not be ready before start of new season

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Aug 8, 2018

The two new stands that were due to be installed during the summer will not be ready for Bristol Rovers’ first home game of the season against Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

A club statement expressed their “great disappointment” in the news, explaining that it was due to “unforeseen engineering issues in the supply chain”.

The temporary stands are of a bespoke construction and involve the manufacture of new roofs.

“Because their construction is more complex, our main contractor, GL Events has encountered unforeseen engineering issues in the supply chain,” the statement said.

The stands are now due to be completed by the start of September, with alternative arrangements made for supporters due to be sitting in these stands to be allocated seats elsewhere in the ground.

The statement added: “GL Events and the club would like to apologise to all supporters who suffer any inconvenience as a result of this delay.”

The new South West Stand is due to be built from August 16 to 18, ready for supporters to use for the match against Portsmouth on August 21.

The new Bristol Energy Family Stand due to be built between September 3 and 5 is expected to be ready for the match with Plymouth on September 8.
