New football tournament for Year 6 girls
Following the Lionesses winning the Euros for the second time in a row, many across the country have been speaking about investing more in women and girls’ football.
This includes metro mayor Helen Godwin who has announced that there will soon be a new football tournament for ten- to 11-year-old girls across the South West.
Godwin made the announcement during a visit to Cossham Street Stadium in South Gloucestershire, where she confirmed the tournament will be open to Year 6 girls from primary schools across the region with more details to be confirmed later this year.
is needed now More than ever
Godwin said: “The next generation of Lionesses have, like people across the West, already been inspired by continued success of the England women’s team.
“The record investment planned for new pitches and facilities by the Football Foundation and others, just like I’ve seen here at Mangotsfield United’s Cossham Street Stadium, fills me with confidence for the future of our national game.
“A new cup tournament for girls in our region is another means by which we can continue to connect communities through sport.
“I’m looking forward to watching some of these matches unfold once the tournament is up and running, and hope be watching the finals at a local stadium here in the West Country next summer!”
