Match report: Bristol City 0-1 Liverpool Women

By Lewis Barton  Sunday Jan 19, 2020

An early goal separated the two sides as Bristol City Women suffered a 1-0 loss against Liverpool at the SGS College Stoke Gifford Stadium.

The away side nearly took the lead after two minutes when Babajide’s driven effort forced Sophie Baggaley into a brilliant fingertip save against the post.

Liverpool got their goal after 13 minutes, when Melissa Lawley’s cross was parried by Baggaley into the path of Rachel Furness, who made no mistake in finishing from close range.

The Robins’ best chance of the first half fell to Liv Chance when she drove forward from the halfway line and released a thunderous effort from 25 yards, which clattered the crossbar.

Bristol City started the second half much better than the first, with Ebony Salmon cutting onto her right before forcing Anke Preuss into a smart save.

City had a chance to equalise 65 minutes in, when Salmon’s cross was parried by the ‘keeper, ensuing a goalmouth scramble where Charlie Welling was fouled and awarded a penalty.

Wellings stepped up to take the spot-kick, however Preuss guessed the right way and saved the effort, as well as the follow-up shot by Poppy Pattison.

The game was an even affair as City pushed for an equaliser late in the second half, however Liverpool and Furness came inches away from doubling their lead with three minutes to go when her long-range strike beat Baggaley and clattered off the crossbar.

Preuss made a brilliant save in the dying stages to deny Megan Wynne an equaliser when she made a brilliant reflex save from close range and guarantee her side all three points.
