WG Grace day in Downend

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Oct 22, 2015

This Friday BBC Radio Bristol will broadcast live all day from Downend Cricket Club to celebrate the life of legendary cricketer WG Grace.

Listeners are invited to a free family day at the club, where activities will include professional coaching by players from Gloucestershire County and commentary masterclasses from BBC Sport presenters.

Exploring Grace’s roles as sportsman, doctor and family man, the station will air a special documentary narrated by cricket commentator Jonathan Agnew, which will tell WG’s story from his start at Downend to his long-term legacy.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The documentary describes Grace as a complex and often misunderstood man, and shows how his hold on the game has lasted for well over five decades.

Listeners can expect to hear some delightful insights from those who played and met him, including his England opening partner CB Fry and his granddaughter Primrose, who talks of sitting on his knee plaiting his beard with blue ribbon – not quite the tough sportsman that has been portrayed over the years.

Hear the documentary at 9am and 6pm on Friday, October 23 on BBC Radio Bristol.
