World Cup winner is Glos women’s head coach
World Cup winner and former England international Fran Wilson has been appointed women’s head coach at Gloucestershire Cricket, marking her first role as a head coach.
“We all want results, but the real goal is to build sustainable success and put the foundations in place that allow us to compete and thrive,” Wilson said of her appointment.
She will take up the post on December 1 and has deep roots in South West cricket, having played for Somerset, Western Storm, and Gloucestershire, as well as coaching across the county’s Girls’ Pathway and Women’s First Team.
Wilson added that she is excited to “build sustainable success” and strengthen player development from youth to senior level.
“I’ve done a lot of coaching alongside playing over the last five or six years, but it’s really exciting to now step into that journey fully, especially with Gloucestershire, a great club that I’ve been involved with for a long time,” she said.
“A huge part of my role is about building those foundations from the first team right through to the age groups, having a genuine influence across the pathway.
“By developing the resources we already have in the county and creating a strong network and structure around the players, I believe we can achieve long-term success.”
Wilson is no stranger to Nevil Road, having played for Gloucestershire from 2022 to 2024 before returning to Somerset this year, where it all started for her back in 2006.

Director of Cricket Jon Lewis described Wilson as “the standout candidate” and said her appointment comes ahead of a “landmark year” for the club, with Bristol hosting England against India in May and matches in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup next summer.
“An outstanding playing career, a history of success at both club and international level, and a deep understanding of elite performance make this an appointment we are extremely proud of,” Lewis said.
“The environment Fran will build will be welcoming, driven, and true to the ‘Gloucestershire way’. Our aim is to provide the best possible environment for our players to learn and develop, and we believe Fran is the ideal person to lead that journey.”

A member of England’s 2017 World Cup-winning squad, Wilson represented her country in more than 100 matches across all formats, where she was known for her agile fielding and consistent middle-order batting.
She enjoyed an 11-year international career and successful domestic spells with Western Storm, The Hundred’s Oval Invincibles, and overseas teams in Australia and New Zealand.
