Pace quartet immortalised with new mural
A new mural at Seat Unique Stadium pays homage to four great fast bowlers in the history of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.
The work was executed by the renowned Bristol-based street artist Silent Hobo, whose vibrant murals brighten spaces across the city, from Montpelier station to the Tobacco Factory.
The newly unveiled piece features Mike Procter, Courtney Walsh, David Payne and David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, all captured in dynamic bowling poses.
is needed now More than ever
This is not the first time Silent Hobo has immortalised cricketing greats at Nevil Road. His earlier work includes a mural of former England Women’s captain and Western Storm star Heather Knight.

The latest mural, located to the left of the Jack Russell Stand, showcases the quartet of fast bowlers in action.
The tribute carries special poignancy following Gloucestershire’s Vitality T20 Blast triumph over West Country rivals Somerset, a victory celebrated with Syd Lawrence in the stands, just a few months after he revealed his diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease.
The moment Syd Lawrence was handed the trophy by James Bracey following the famous win at Edgbaston, captured by photographer Harry Trump, was shortlisted for Wisden’s 2024 Photograph of the Year.

Lawrence, who played for Gloucestershire between 1981 and 1997, claimed 625 wickets. He also holds the distinction of being the first England-born Black cricketer to represent the national side.
The late Mike Procter was not only a star of Gloucestershire County Cricket but also one of the greatest all-rounders ever to grace the county game. Between 1965 and 1981, he amassed a staggering 1,113 wickets tally, earning him the nickname “Proctershire” among Shire supporters.
David Payne, a modern-day great for Shire, boasts 625 wickets across all formats. His heroics during the 2024 Vitality T20 Blast earned him the Vitality Blast Player of the Year award, as he equalled the record for the most wickets in an English domestic T20 season, with 33 dismissals.
Courtney Walsh, a towering presence at Nevil Road between 1984 and 1998, took 1,112 wickets for the club. The ICC Hall of Fame inductee once held the record for the most Test wickets.
To pay tribute to Syd Lawrence, County Ground is set to turn pink on June 20 as Shire takes on Hampshire Hawks during their Vitality Blast campaign for 2025. The pink ball fixture, organised in collaboration with MND Association, is set to raise awareness on Motor Neurone Disease.
