County Ground floodlights given go-ahead

Plans for controversial floodlights at the County Ground in Ashley Down have been approved by Bristol City Council planners.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club had said international cricket matches would have to be cancelled unless the permanent floodlights were approved.

Chief executive Will Brown said: “We are delighted that the committee has come to this decision as it finally allows us to realise our ambitions to bring international cricket to Bristol.

“We would like to thank everyone who has helped us develop these plans, particularly our neighbours whom we have continued to work with since February. We will continue to work with them and officers to ensure the Floodlight Management Plan is in place before we start using the lights.”

Local residents claimed the floodlights would dominate the view and cause considerable light pollution. Planners initially deferred the application in February to allow more time for consultation with the community and further reports on alternative lights.

The club said it hoped to install the lights ahead of the start of the 2016 season.
